Corey Mitchell
Corey Mitchell grew up in San Diego, CA. He then moved to Balboa Island, CA. Here he studied graphic design, typography, and color theory for advertising and marketing applications. Advertising collateral, web design, and personal art would compose the greater part of his early portfolio. Having an eye for minor details has become an important part of everything Corey does. He expanded his artistic skills to photography and lighting where he learned how important the perfect tone of light with the proper hue in just the right place can create an atmosphere unparallel to any other. Then the trick was to capture it. This direction led him to thinking "Why don't I just make the lights?". With this thought in mind he was on his way to becoming a lighting and hot glass artist. Corey would start his journey by taking classes at Palomar College, CA. Here he met some amazing glass artists with several different backgrounds from foundry to ceramics. Some of these artisans would become major influences on his progress and skill. He would soon learn that there are numerous ways to manipulate glass. There are also several different chemical compositions of glass that each have their own unique rules to application. This would open his mind up to fresh new ideas of combining the different techniques and types of glass to achieve an artistic piece that would be truely one of a kind. Corey has taken up lampworking, furnace working, and fusing. These are three completely different types of manipulation techniques that yield very different results. He has studied under Scott Kempton (Blacksheep Glass) and Mike Herman (Nottingham Studios) in a very intensive Venetian goblet workshop. Here he learned to use traditional Italian techniques to create very thin and delicate goblets. Expanding on these techniques he would incorporate them into his own unique and personal style. Corey takes much of his inspiration from nature. His work reflects the sublime enviroment of the beach and underwater life. His creative energy is drawn from the coral reefs to the deep blue ocean. The transmission, reflection, and refraction of light in nature is projected organicly thru and from within the glass seeming to make it come to life. Corey uses these natural elements as a foundation for his work. Combining opaque and translucent colors he is able to capture the essential universal beauty around us. Corey is drawn to this unique medium because it is both functional and beautiful at the same time.
