The paintings are vehicles for a representation of history, particularly the culture surrounding ideas of capitalism and its relationship to industry. The paintings are made with oil and acrylic on canvas and are painted with minimal color .The red and black paintings are worked out first as illustrated collages on acetate then finally painted on to canvas once the composition is worked out, using an over head projector .The blue paintings are worked out directly on to canvas from the background texture to the illustrated landscape. The paintings are of an imaginary world. Using the development of architecture, bridges, railways, and machinery, the people are trapped in an early 20th century silent-film between an uncertain time of unpromising industrial culture, and the idea of people being partially relieved of hard-labor. The inspiration for these paintings , come from early artistic works from photographers, film makers, writers, as well as other painters from the early 20th century, such as Mario Sironi, Franz Kafka, Fritz Lang, Margaret Bourke-White, and Paul Strand. What my work attempts to demonstrate is a forgotten past of the machine age and early modernism in a comptempory world full of technological growth and recycled images. That once there was a time of industrial influenced art that had an oppressive fascist attitude but still a romantic quality for the machines and factories of the early 20th century.
